Chemical Safety Management & Emergency Spill Control Training

To provide knowledge on chemical waste handling, disposal, and knowledge on chemical emergency response plan and spill control.

Chemical Safety Management & Emergency Spill Control Training

DURATION: 2 Days

Chemicals are used in all types of industries, regardless of the activities performed. Every day, thousands of workers are exposed to chemicals, increasing the likelihood of the occurrence of various types of health problems. The incidence of chronic diseases (e.g., cancer) resulting from exposure to chemicals is steadily increasing. For this reason in particular, all employees who handle chemicals must receive regular training to ensure that they are aware of the effects of improper chemical handling.

Besides, training for chemical handlers is also required under Malaysian legal requirements, as stated under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1994 (USECHH Regulations). Based on the USECHH Regulations, it is mandatory for every organisation to conduct chemical safety training for all chemical handlers at least once every two years.

This training is suitable for all chemical handlers, and participants will be provided with a very comprehensive explanation of all aspects related to safety in chemical handling, starting from receiving chemicals for operational use until final disposal of chemical waste.

It is ultimately important for every organisation to prepare a plan to respond to any emergency situation, including chemical spillage. Chemical spillage, even a small spill, may have very serious consequences, such as fire, the release of toxic gas, or explosion.

In the event of a chemical spill, every related employee is responsible for prompt and proper clean-up. Improper clean-up of a chemical spill may result in injury, illness, fire, release to the environment, or property damage. Planning for chemical spills is essential. Before beginning work with chemicals, one should be sure that he or she has adequate training for cleaning up small spills and that the appropriate types and amounts of spill clean-up materials and personal protective equipment are immediately available.

This course is specifically designed for chemical spill response personnel to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills for emergency response in the event of a chemical spill, in order to prevent or mitigate the spill’s associated adverse effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Chemical Safety Management training important?

Chemical safety management helps to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental damage caused by the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals in the workplace. It ensures regulatory compliance and protects employee health and safety.

This training is suitable for all employees involved in the handling, storage, or management of chemicals, including warehouse staff, production operators, supervisors, safety officers, Emergency Response Team (ERT) members, and managers responsible for workplace safety.

  • Chemical classification and hazard identification
  • Safe handling, storage, and labelling of chemicals
  • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Emergency spill response procedures
  • First-aid measures for chemical exposure
  • Regulatory and legal requirements

Yes. The training includes practical sessions such as chemical classification exercises, SDS workshops, PPE application, chemical spill handling drills, and a site visit for hazard identification and emergency simulations.

  • The 1-day course focuses on basic awareness, legal requirements, SDS, safe handling, and a simple spill response demo.
  • The 2-day course includes all Day 1 topics plus extended practical sessions, a site visit, chemical hazard identification workshop, comprehensive spill handling drills (indoor & outdoor), and emergency scenario simulations.

Yes. The 2-day training program includes chemical spill handling simulations and emergency response drills based on realistic scenarios.

For the 2-day training, participants will undergo a simple quiz or WRITTEN assessment to evaluate competency in chemical safety and spill response.

Initial training should be provided before employees start handling chemicals, with refresher training conducted at least annually or when new hazards, chemicals, or procedures are introduced.

To test the effectiveness of your spill response plan, improve staff readiness, identify weaknesses, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Yes. Our Chemical Safety Management & Emergency Spill Control Training is HRD Corp claimable. Companies registered with HRD Corp can apply for funding to cover training costs. For assistance with HRD Corp grant applications, please visit: https://hrdcorp.gov.my/hrdcorp-claimable-courses.

Yes, two companies can collaborate to organize a join the training session under HRD Corp’s Skim Latihan Bersama. Here’s how it works:

a. Organizing the Session:

  • Both companies can arrange the training together, selecting a training provider and coordinating logistics.
  • Each company must ensure that the training provider is HRD Corp registered and that the course is claimable under HRD Corp.

b. Cost Splitting:

  • The training cost can be split based on the number of participants from each company or through any agreed proportion.
  • For example, if Company A has 10 participants and Company B has 5, Company A may cover two-thirds of the cost, and Company B covers one-third.
  • The split must be agreed upon in advance, as HRD Corp will process claims separately for each company.

c. HRD Corp Grant Application:

  • Each company needs to submit its own grant application to HRD Corp for its share of the training costs.
  • In the application, each company should indicate that the training is conducted under the Skim Latihan Bersama.
  • Both companies must meet HRD Corp’s requirements for eligibility and submit the necessary documents for claim approval.

This setup allows companies to share training costs while ensuring that each company’s employees receive HRD Corp funding.
